Special security, protection battalion launched

Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Thursday asked members of newly formed Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBn) not to do excess in the name of providing security to the VVIPs.“You must ensure security to the VVIps but at the same time you have to keep in mind that they’re not separated from the mass people,” he said while addressing the launching ceremony of SPBn at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
SPBn, a specialised unit of Bangladesh Police, has been formed to provide security to the VVIPs, including the President and the Prime Minister, as well as the visiting foreign guests declared as VVIPs.
Initially, the SPBn has been formed consisting of 642 members, led by one Deputy Inspector General of Police, against the sanctioned posts of 1,400.
Addressing the function, the Home Minister said the SPBn was formed following the directive of the Prime Minister. “Members of the SPBn have to provide security to the VVIPs in coordination with Special Security Force (SSF).”
Terming Bangladesh Police ‘better than any other police force of Southeast Asian countries, MK Alamgir hoped that members of the newly formed specialised police unit would bring reputation from abroad alongside performing their duties at home.
Admitting that the number of vehicles the SPBn has is insufficient compared to its existing manpower and responsibilities, the Home Minister assured that the problem would be solved on priority basis.
Chaired by Additional IGP of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Sheikh Hemayet Hossain, the function was addressed, among others, by State Minister for Home Affairs Advocate Shamsul Hoque Tuku, security adviser to the Prime Minister Maj Gen (retd) Tarik Ahmed Siddique and IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker.
Homer Secretary CQK Mostak Ahmed and senior police officers were present.
