Jamaat backed candidate elected Sylhet City Councillor

Jamaat-backed candidate Abdul Muhit Jabed was elected the councillor
of ward 16 at the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) yesterday. Jabed
begged 2501 votes while his rival Jamal Ahmed begged 2377 votes.
Rashedul Islam, an assistant returning officer, confirmed the result
to the media personnel yesterday evening. “The election was held in a
peaceful manner.” he said.
In the last SCC poll held on June 15, Jabed and Jamal begged an equal
number of votes, 1774. So a re-poll was organised yesterday to find a
winner.
The need for re-polling in the ward inevitably came as its two
councillor candidates-Jamal Ahmed and Abdul Muhit Jabed—got equal
1,774 votes in the city corporation polls on June 15.
Consequently, the Election commission fixed July 6 for the
re-election. Eight thousand and one hundred voters were enrolled in
the four polling centers. -Our Correspondent
