Jamaat’s countrywide hartal underway

DHAKA: The countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal, called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in protest against the arrest of its senior Nayeb-e-Ameer AKM Yusuf, is underway.Law enforcers have taken position at different points in the capital. Arrest of some Jamaat leaders in the city and in outlying districts have been reported.
Earlier on Sunday, the hartal announcement was made through a press release of the party after observance of hartal called by Jamaat’s student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir to protest the death sentence passed by the International Crimes Tribunal – II against Jamaat’s senior leader Kamaruzzaman who is also a former president of the Shibir.
Earlier on that day, law enforcers arrested Moulana AKM Yousuf from his Dhanmondi residence after ICT issued arrest warrant against him for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 War of Independence.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 fixed Today as the date for passing order on the bail plea of Jamaat-e-Islami senior Nayeb-e-Ameer AKM Yusuf, detained for war crimes.
On May 8, the prosecution submitted to ICT formal charge against Yousuf with 15 allegations, including rape, looting and genocide.
AKM Yousuf was also charged for forming the Razakar force, collaborators of the Pakistan occupation army, first in Khulna during the Liberation War.
On April 22, the probe body of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) submitted charge sheet against AKM Yousuf with 15 allegations including rape, looting and genocide.
