Dhaka, Aug 11 – Prime Minister’s ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy on Saturday said arrested photographer Shahidul Alam’s claim of torture is yet another one of his false claims against the government. Joy in his Facebook post said Shahidul Alam was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and he was examined by doctors there.
“They found absolutely no injuries or indication of torture,” he wrote in a post shared on his verified Facebook page.
Joy said even the international media spoke directly with hospital officials and they confirmed this.
“This just proves how dishonest Shahidul Alam is. He is making false claims of torture in court and playacting in front of cameras pretending he is having trouble walking.”
Drik Gallery Managing Director Shahidul Alam was taken back to the office of Detective Branch of police on Wednesday afternoon after the necessary medical check-up at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
Earlier, in the day Shahidul Alam was taken to the hospital around 8 am for treatment following a High Court order, said Deputy Commissioner (DB-North) Moshiur Rahman.
He underwent necessary tests at the hospital and new course of actions will be taken according to their advice, said the police officials.
The High Court on Thursday asked the government to conduct an additional medical examination of Shahidul Alam, now on a seven-day remand, following Section 2(6) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013.
On Sunday night, detectives detained Shahidul Alam, also Chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, from his Dhanmondi residence following his Facebook posts on the student protests demanding road safety.
Later on Monday, he was shown arrested in a case filed under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act accusing him of spreading propaganda and false information through social media and electronic media. – UNB
