Anti-terrorism law to enforce discipline in society: Law Minister

Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed on Wednesday said the new anti-terrorism law will help enforce discipline in the society and public life and establish the rule of law.“Public life is put on disarray through different destructive activities, including torching of vehicles, attack on police, uprooting trees and destruction of property during or on the eve of hartal. This law (Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Act 2013) will play a role in establishing the rule of law and maintaining peace in public life and society,” he said.
The minister was talking to reporters after attending the concluding ceremony of the training of trainers on arbitration-resolution at a city hotel.
Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (Biak) and International Law Institute of Washington organised the training programme.
Parliament on Tuesday passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill-2013 allowing the courts to accept videos, still photographs and audio clips used in social media as evidence.
About opposition’s allegation that the law was formulated aiming to harass them, Shafique termed it false and propaganda.
Earlier while addressing the programme, the minister laid emphasis on the arbitration for quick disposal of disputes.
He said the government is giving more importance to resolving disputes through alternative way outside courts.
ILO trainer David Branson, Programme Manager of Bangladesh Investment Climate Found Dr Masrur Riaz and Biak chief executive Tawfiq Ali, among others, addressed the programme presided over by Biak chairman Mahbubur Rahman. (Source: UNB)
