Newspaper editor gets 9 yrs in extortion case

A Shariatpur court on Wednesday sentenced a newspaper editor to nine years’ rigorous imprisonment.The court also fined him Tk1,40000, in default, to suffer one and a half years more in prison.The convict was identified as Iqbal Hossain Sardar, editor of two vernacular dailies—the daily Shariatpur Kantha and the daily Ajana— published respectively from Shariatpur and Dhaka.He was tried in absentia.
