No censorship imposed on media: PM

Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday categorically said the government did not impose any censorship on media as they believe in freedom of press.“The Awami League-led grand-alliance government, which believes in press freedom, has not imposed any censorship on media,” she said.
The premier, also Awami League president, came up with the assertion in response to a query from lawmaker Tajul Islam in Parliament.
She also told the House that misuse of accreditation cards would be considered as crime.
Sheikh Hasina said, “The government did not impose any bar on media. But, some media houses are misusing the freedom publishing news, which are creating confusion among people.”
She said: “Printing and Publication Act (Declaration and Registration)-1973, Bangladesh Press Council Act-1974 and Accreditation Rules-2003 have been amended to prevent fake information and confusion.”
As per, Printing and Publication Act-973, a district magistrate could impose a bar on publishing. Bangladesh Press Council could inform and rebuff on the charge of allegations of falsified information, she added.
According to the Accreditation Act-2003, if accreditation card holder found guilty, the information department could cancel it.
