Referring to the draft Sarkari Chakori Ain which proposed taking prior permission for arresting any public servant, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Monday said the corrupt officials have nothing to rejoice with it.
“We firmly believe there’ll be no law to protect the corrupt elements. However, there’s no scope of getting away with committing corruption in any law,” he said while exchanging Eid greetings with reporters at his office.
On August 20, the Cabinet approved the draft Sarkari Chakori Ain 2018 with a provision for the ACC to take prior permission of the authorities concerned for arresting any public servant.
“No public servant can be arrested until a court frames charges against him/her. A government employee can be arrested before charge-framing only after taking prior permission from the authorities concerned,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam had said while briefing reporters on the outcome of the meeting.
The ACC Chairman said they will not seek anybody’s permission for their work. “The Commission will not act as a puppet. We’ll make arrest whenever required as the Commission has its own laws,” he said, adding that there will be no problem in arresting the corrupt elements even if the new law is enacted.
Iqbal Mahmood, however, said they want the honest government employees to be protected. “We believe no law will be made to protect the corrupt officials.”
