Police ASP gets life-term in extortion case

Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-3 on Thursday sentenced an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to life-term imprisonment in a case filed on the charge of attempt to extort Tk 5 million from the proprietor of SA Paribahan and SA Television. Judge Md Motahar Hossain of the court delivered the verdict on Thursday noon. He also fined the convict Tk three million, of which Tk 500,000 wall be deposited to the national exchequer, and the complainant, proprietor of the business farm, Salahuddin Ahmed would get the remaining Tk 2.5 million, as compensation. The court also sentenced the accused to five years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Other accused in the case SI Wahed Mia was acquitted in the case, as the charge was not proved against him.
The convict Mostofa Kamal is the incumbent Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) railway, Nilphamari. During the incident, he was the ASP of Habiganj.
On November 20, 2003, Salahuddin Ahmed filed the case against Mostofa Kamal and SI Wahed Mia on the charge of attempt to extort Tk seven million on December 22, 2002.
The court framed charges against the accused on April, 2010.
