Police HQ forms committee to probe DIG Mizan’s graft allegations

Dhaka, June 18 – Police Headquarters have formed a three members committee to investigate allegations of graft and submit a probe report in a case filed against Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman.
Confirming the matter, Assistant Inspector General of Police (Media & Public Relations) Sohel Rana said that further measures will be taken after the probe report has been handed in.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said that strong action will be taken against Mizan and reiterated that the process to take action against him is underway.
While talking to reporters after a function marking the signing of the annual performance agreement of Security Services Division under the home ministry, Asaduzzaman said, “No one is above the law. He (Mizan) has already been suspended.”
According to AIG Sohel Rana, the probe committee members are: Mainur Rahman Chowdhury, Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) will lead the committee that formed comprises of Shahabuddin Koraishi, Additional IGP, and Mia Masud Hossain, Superintendent of Police at Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Earlier, DIG Mizanur Rahman alleged that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director, Khandaker Enamul Basir, accepted his bribes worth Tk 40 lakhs—in two phases—in exchange for information.
On June 10, the ACC said it has suspended its director Basir and removed him from the probe team that was investigating the wealth of DIG Mizanur, for leaking a probe report to DIG Mizanur.
Later, the ACC appointed another director, Manzur Morshed, to investigate the allegation of amassing wealth by the police official.
On May 3 last year, ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary interrogated Mizan about his alleged accumulation of illegal wealth. Later, Basir was given charge of the investigation.
A private TV channel reported recently that Mizan gave Tk 40 lakh to ACC Director Basir to get a clean chit in a corruption case.
DIG Mizan was an additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He was withdrawn on January 9 last year following the allegation of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel.
He had also reportedly married a woman forcibly and tortured her. Mizan allegedly picked up a 25-year-old woman in July, 2017 and then forcibly married her.
He had also implicated her in a false case whereby she was arrested and remained in jail for three weeks.
Earlier on Monday, ACC has formed a three-member committee to probe into an allegation of bribery against ACC director Basir and DIG Mizan.
ACC Director Sheikh Md Fanafillah is leading the committee that includes assistant directors Gulshan Anowar Pradhan and Md Salauddin.
ACC has also formed a fresh committee with Director Manjur Morshed, Deputy Director Abu Bakar Siddiqui and Assistant Director Neamul Ahasan Gazi to enquire into the allegation of wealth amassed illegally by Mizan. – Staff Reporter
