Dhaka – President Abdul Hamid today inaugurated the academic and administrative buildings of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) at the Mirpur Canonment and asked concerned authorities to put emphasis on extra curricular activities in the education system for students to flourish their talents and creativity.Initiated through an ordinance promulgated in June 2005, the BUP started functioning at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) at the same cantonment. Parliament endorsed the ordinance through the enactment of a law in 2009.
The BUP offers higher learning in five faculties – business studies, security and strategic studies, technical and engineering studies, general studies and medical studies. Eleven military colleges and institutes – National Defence Cllege, Defence Services Command and Saff College, Military Institute of Science and Technology, Armed Forces Medical College, Armed Forces Medical Institute, Bangladesh Military Academy, Bangladesh Naval Academy, Bangladesh Air Force Academy, Artillery Centre and School, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology; and BSD, CDMEd, PSLT .
After Pakistan only Bangladesh has such a university in the region. Developed countries like the US have war colleges.
The President said, “Innovation and creativity are required for ensuring proper education considering present competitive and fast changing global scenario,” he said.
The was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony which was also addressed by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid as the special guest and the Vice Chancellor of BUP Major General Sheikh Mamun Khaled. Chiefs of three services were present among others.
The President hoped that students and researchers would be able to contribute to the country’s socio-economic development through creative activities.
President Hamid urged the teachers to help build a knowledge-based society by creating ideal citizens. “Today’s student community will be the future leaders and main driving force of the country’s socio-economic development,” he said.
The President said quality of education of a university depends largely on its environment and infrastructural facilities. “As the chancellor of this new university, I hope BUP will be able to create environment for quality education,” he said.
The BUP has built one six-storied academic building with basement and one six-storied administrative building with basement at a cost of Taka 50.52 crore.
