Rape accused killed in Chattogram ‘gunfight’

Chattogram, Apr 29 (UNB) – A rape accused was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Amirabad in Lohagara upazila early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, owner of a coaching centre, and an accused in a case filed over violating a Class-IX student. He had been on the run since the case was filed against him two weeks back.

Tipped off, a team of Rab conducted a drive in the area around 4:30am, said Md Mashkur Rahman, assistant director (media) of Rab-7.

Sensing presence of the elite force members, Saiful opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

After the gunfight, the Rab team recovered Saiful’s dead body from the spot.

On April 12, Saiful reportedly tied up the hands and legs of the girl and violated her in absence of his family members.

A case was then filed against him.
