Resume SC bench despite blockade, urges pro-govt lawyers

A group of lawyers loyal to ruling Awami League on Thursday called upon the judges of the High Court to resume their  functions in the interest of justice during political programmes like hartal or blockade enforced by the main stream opposition parties. They came up with the view at a meeting held in front of the chamber of the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) with advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, a presidium member of Awami League, in the chair.   It has become a practice for long to refrain from judicial functioning by the judges of the High Court during political programmes like hartal or blockade as lawyers observing the programme did not attend the courts resulted in adjournment of the listed cases, pushing the justice-seekers into unexpected sufferings.   Advocate Humayun said people from across the country come to the higher court for seeking remedy and it would not be wise to close the door for them on the pretext of hartal or blockade. If it continues, the logjam of cases along with sufferings of the litigants would also increase, he added.   Former SCBA secretaries SM Rezaul Karim and Momtazuddin Mehdi, Mamun Mahbub and Motahar Hossain Sazu, among others, spoke at the meeting. – UNB
