Elections to 117 Upazilas in 52 districts will be held in the second phase on Feb 27.
Army will maintain law and order in the polling areas like in the first phase, the Election Commission (EC) has announced.
The submission of nomination ends on Feb 2, while the deadline for the withdrawal of candidature is Feb 11, according to the schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday.
Nominations will be screened on Feb 4.
“We have decided to deploy army like in the previous Upazila polls,” the CEC said.
In the first phase, 102 Upazilas from 40 districts will go to polls on Feb 19.
CEC Ahmad after a meeting with the home ministry officials said the EC would decide on how long the troops would be on election duty.
Army was deployed in the Jan 22, 2009 Upazila elections for five days, from Jan 20 to Jan 24.
The CEC held a meeting with top officials of the home ministry, armed forces, police, RAB, BGB, Coastguard, NSI, DGFI, SB, Ansar-VDP ahead of the polls.
Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz said a section of police would be busy with sports and examinations during the elections.
Although the Upazila polls will be organised in stages, a decision on the number of policemen to be put on election duty will be decided then, he said.
He hoped the law and order would be stable during the Upazila Parishad elections.-bdnews24.com
