Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday urged the city dwellers to inform the nearest police station if any extortionist demands money over phone ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Briefing reporters at the DMP media centre, Joint Commissioner (Detective Branch) Monirul Islam said detectives have information some extortionists have been demanding money from people over phone.
“Many of them have already given money as the extortionists asked for without informing the law enforcers in fear,” he said.
Monir urged the people who are becoming the targets of silent extortion either to immediately inform the nearest police or contact the DMP over hotlines — 0171339826-9/01191001100/01191001111.
“They can even provide information even without their identity, Joint Commissioner Monir said. He said law enforcement agencies have taken adequate steps in this regard.
Referring to transfer of money from one place to another, Monir said as financial transaction increases during Ramadan, trading houses, financial organsations or individuals are requested to avail of police escorts during shifting their money.
He also advised the city dwellers not to eat anything from unknown people to avert traps of ‘Aggyan Party’ members. The city dwellers have also been advised not to wear costly ornaments during shopping and not to shop at midnight to avert the risk of unpleasant incidents. – UNB
