Shaukat Mahmud under fresh remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Shaukat Mahmud, BNP Chairperson’s Adviser and also the  President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), on one-day fresh remand in each of four cases lodged for creating violence.
Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order on Monday after hearing on the remand pleas of the Investigation Officers of the cases. Earlier, they produced Shawkat Mahmud to the court with a 10-day remand plea in each of the cases.
Of the four violence cases, three were filed with Paltan Police Station and the remaining one was lodged with Motijheel Police Station in the capital.Meanwhile, the same court put Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President, Rajib Ahsan on one-day remand in each of the three cases filed with Paltan Police Station.
Earlier, on Sunday, the Investigation Officers of the eight cases: three with Motijheel Police Station and five with Paltan Police Station appealed to the court to place Shawkat Mahmud, on 10-day remand in each of the ten cases. The court decided to hear on the bail petitions on Monday at 11 am.
Before that, on August 19, the same court put Shawkat Mahmud on a three-day police remand to quiz him is a case filed with Ramna Police Station for arson attack.
On August 18, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested him from in front of Samurai Convention Centre in the capital’s Panthapath area. The police said he was also arrested in connection with three cases filed with Jatrabari and Ramna Police Station on the charges of arson attacks on vehicles, vandalising vehicles and crude bomb blasts. – Special Correspondent
