Steps taken for peaceful KCC polls: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Sunday said special measures have been taken for holding the election to Khulna City Corporation in a free and peaceful manner.“Law enforcers have been asked to keep outsiders at bay and tackle trouble makers with an iron hand ahead of the polls,” he told a views-exchange meeting at the conference room of Khulna deputy commissioner.
The CEC said 18 executive magistrates have been posted in the KCC area ahead of the election.
The mayoral and councilor candidates contesting the polls attended the meeting.
Kazi Rakibuddin hoped that the city dwellers will be able to elect the candidates of their choice without any fear.
Referring to the demand for army deployment, he said no situation has been created so far for which army could be deployed during the election slated for June 15.
He asked Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner M Shafiqur Rahman to take steps to ensure the safety of those who submitted their licensed weapons ahead of the election.
Reminding the candidates about complying with the electoral code of conduct, the CEC said: “The candidates themselves should maintain peace and discipline by complying with the electoral code of conduct so that the election officials are not compelled to enforce it. Those who will violate the code of conduct won’t be spared.”
About the allegation of buying votes with black money, Rakibuddin said: “It’s difficult to detect it. Steps could be taken if the candidates cooperate with the EC.”
The CEC sought cooperation of all in stopping the use of black money in the election. “It’s possible to elect honest and qualified candidates if the use of black money and muscle power in the polls can be checked.”
