Suspected criminal killed in the city in gunfight with RAB

Dhaka-A suspected criminal was killed in what law enforcers claimed a gunfight between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Satarkul road in the city’s Badda area early Friday.The elite force recovered one foreign made pistol, one country-made pipe-gun, one magazine along with two round bullets and one sharp weapon from the spot.

The deceased was identified as Zahirul Islam Bijy, 32, alias Kutta Zahir, a notorious criminal of the area.

Tipped off that a gang of criminals were staying in the area near ‘Sun Valley residential project’ for committing crime, a team of Rab-1 conducted a drive in the area around 3:05 am, said Rab headquarters sources.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, the criminals opened fire to them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Zahir was caught in the line of fire, while his other associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, the Rab members rescued Zahir from the spot and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead, said hospital sources.

Two Rab members were also injured in the gunfight.

Zahir was wanted in several cases, including for murder and extortion.

He was also involved in arms trading, said Rab.-News Desk
