Dhaka, Sept 27 (UNB) – Versatile writer Syed Shamsul Haq passed away at a city hospital on Tuesday evening. He was 81. Haq, who had long been fighting with deadly lung cancer, breathed his last at United Hospital around 5:26, hospital sources said.
He left behind his wife Anwara Syed Haq, son Ditio Syed-Haq, daughter Bidita Sadi and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. UNB News Agency Reported.
On April 15, the writer went to London for treatment at Royal Marsden Hospital, and returned home on September 2 as doctors there found no hope for his cure of cancer.
On return home, he had been undergoing treatment at United Hospital.
On Wednesday, the body of the great writer will be taken to Bangla Academy at 10 am, said President of Jatiya Kabita Parishad Muhammad Samad.
Later, his body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar around 11 am where people from all walks of life will pay their last respects to the versatile writer.
Haq’s body will be taken to his birthplace, Kurigram, following a namaz-e-janaja at the Dhaka University Central Mosque on Wednesday.
Later, he will be buried on the Kurigram Govt College premises as per his last wish which he made last year during a reception at the college.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock at his demise.
In separate messages of condolence, they prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed their deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Born on Dec 27, 1935 at Kurigram, Haq has become one of the country’s leading poets and playwrights and earned the title of wield equal mastery over essays, novel, poetry, and plays.
Ha received the Bangla Academy Award in 1966, Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Swadhinata Padal Award, in 2000 for his contributions to Bangla literature.
His literary works were included in the curricula of school, secondary, higher secondary and graduation levels Bengali literature in Bangladesh.
