A Dhaka court on Saturday sent five senior BNP leaders including
incumbent lawmakers and the party’s Standing Committee members, MK
Anwar and Barrister Moudud Ahmed to jail in two separate cases filed
with Motijheel Police Station.
Magistrate Joynab Begum of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM)
Court passed the order amidst her jam packed courtroom at about 5 pm
after partial hearing while the Detective Branch (DB) of Police had
produced them before the court at 4 pm.
The court fixed November 14 for hearing on the BNP leaders’ bail plea
and the remand petition of the prosecution as the prosecution failed
to submit the case document (CD) to the court.
However the court granted division, first class status and treatment
facilities for the accused.
Other three leaders are Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul
Islam Mia, BNP chairperson’s advisor Abdul Awal Mintu and Special
Assistant Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
Earlier, the police produced them to the court with 20 days’ remand
plea in the two cases and before that they were shown arrested in the
cases.
On behalf of the prosecution Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Md
Abdullah Abu and District Public Prosecutor Khandaker Abdul Mannan
moved the remand petition while among others Bangladesh Bar Council’s
Vice Chairman Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, former Attorney General and
Supreme Court Bar Association President AJ Mohammad Ali, and Barrister
Rafiqul Haque moved the bail petitions opposing the remand plea of the
prosecution.
They told the court that the five leaders names were not included in
the First Information Report (FIR) of the cases. They were taken into
custody to interrupt the shut down programme of the BNP-led 18-party
alliance’s movement for no-party caretaker Government.
On September 24 and November 5, the cases were filed with the police
Station on the charges of attacking police, obstructing government
works, directing others to do several subversive activities and for
explosion of cocktails.
It has been learnt that 10 accused in the case filed under the
Explosive Substances Act meanwhile secured bail from the court.
Sub-inspector Khandaker Zahid Ali and Mizanur Rahman of DB are the two
investigation officers of the two cases.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Ataul Karim of the CMM court Saturday placed
Humayun Kabir of BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on one-day remand in
a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act. He was arrested with
Shimul Biswas. However, police sought a 5-day remand of Humayun. –
