Varsity Teacher indicted for derogatory remark on PM in facebook

A teacher of the National University has been indicted for making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family on Facebook.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-ur-Rashid passed the order on Monday after rejecting a defence petition. He will hear witnesses on Mar 23.
The teacher, AKM Wahiduzzaman, has been indicted under Sections 500 and 506 of the penal code. He might be sentenced to two to seven years in prison, if found guilty.Wahiduzzaman, a geography teacher, allegedly made a comment on Facebook on Aug 22, ridiculing Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul, calling them ‘pseudo scholars’.
AB Siddiqui, President of the Awami League’s affiliate body Jananetri Parishad, filed a general dairy with Rampura Police on Sep 11 and a defamation case with the Metropolitan Magistrate’s court on Oct 8.
Wahiduzzaman secured one month’s bail from High Court on Oct 11.
Siddiqui had filed another defamation case on April 23 against one Hafizur Rahman Rana, a lecturer of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), for issuing a death threat to the Prime Minister through his status on Facebook.
A Dhaka court sentenced the lecturer to seven years’ imprisonment on June 27. – bdnews24.com
