Bangladesh national Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis , now detained in the USA for his alleged plot to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Manhattan, is awaiting the verdict which is scheduled to be delivered on May 30.The degree of punishment is likely to be lower as Nafis made his confessional statement at a court in New York admitting his guilt.Bangladesh mission in the US is closely monitoring the trial of Bangladeshi student Nafis and Bangladesh official will remain present at the court during the verdict pronouncement, diplomatic sources said.
Though the Bangladesh government showed interest about giving consular access to Nafis he did not respond to that offer positively.
On February 7, he made his confessional statement at the Brooklyn’s Eastern district Federal court in New York.
The crimes that Nafis reportedly committed refer to life-term imprisonment generally but the degree of punishment comes down if the accused admits his guilt.
The primary hearing on the case against Nafis started at Brooklyn’s Eastern district Federal court in New York in January second week.
The lawyer who stood in the court for Nafis strongly pleaded that Nafis is innocent as he has been implicated in the case in a planned way.
Earlier, Nafis claimed in the court that the allegations brought against him were not true, and he was innocent.
On October 17, the FBI arrested 21-year-old Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis after he reportedly tried to detonate a fake 1,000-pound (454-kg) car bomb outside the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan, according to a criminal complaint.
Nafis went to the United States on a scholarship in January last year after completing five semesters in BBA at North South University.
Earlier, Nafis’ family members said the allegations against his son were totally false, and that Nafis went to the US to study. UNB
