Zia Orphanage & Charitable Trust graft case deferred

The Third Special Judge Court of Dhaka on Thursday decided that next deposition of Zia Orphanage Trust case will be held on July 14 while the same court deferred BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s defense hearing in Zia Charitable Trust graft case to August 11.The makeshift court of Third Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamader, set up on the premises of jail department in the old city’s Bakshibazar area, passed the order on Thursday.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the graft case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda, her eldest son Tarique Rahman and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2.10-crore, which came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
The other accused are former BNP lawmaker Kazi Saleemul Haque, businessperson Sharfuddin Ahmed, Khaleda’s former Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and Momenur Rahman.
On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the other graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
The other accused persons of the case are Harris Chowdhury, Ziaul Islam Munna, Assistant Private Secretary (APS) to Harris, Monirul Islam Khan and APS to Sadeque Hossain Khoka, mayor of the erstwhile combined Dhaka City Corporation. -Court Correspondent
