17 KCC councilors-elect wanted in criminal cases

At least 17 Councilors-elect of both 18-party backed and 14-party
backed out of 31 winning councilors to Khulna City Corporation (KCC)
are accused in several criminal cases.
Of them, 11 from BNP-led alliance and 6 others of Awami League backed
and one from Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.
According to the reports of Khulna unit of ‘Sushasoner Jonnyo
Nagorik,’ 17 councilors-elect are accused in murder, extortion,
illegal arms possessing and terror activities. Mostly were acquitted
by the court and remained faces trial.
Four AL backed councilors-elect out of six are accused in various
criminal cases.
KCC ward no 21 councilor-elect Md Shamsuzzaman Mia alias Swapon was
acquitted from a murder case while ward no 1 councilor Shahdat Mina
was acquitted from another murder case. He has also been facing
another murder case.
The councilors-elect of ward no-8 Sahidur Rahman and ward no- 13, S M
Khurshid Ahmed also were acquitted of extortion and violence related
cases.
Shamsuzzaman Miah claimed that opposition BNP filed two false and
baseless cases against him during the BNP led four-party alliance
government period. The court later acquitted him from the allegation,
he added.
In 2011, a worker Mosaddek Ali was killed at Phulbari gate area in
Khanjahan Ali Thana in the city. A case was filed with the police
station identifying Shahadat Mina as prime accused.
The SUJON report stated that 11, out of 22 BNP backed KCC
councilors-elect are accused in murder, extortion and illegal arms
possessing cases. Six councilors were acquitted of the cases filed
against them in different police stations in KMP and other five
councilors have been facing the trial.
Sheikh Sawkot Ali, councilor of ward no-6 has been accused in illegal
arms and an attempt to murder cases, S M Abul Kalam Azad of Ward no-14
has been accused in three cases including violent activities. Md
Anisur Rahman Biswas, councilor of Ward no-16, Aman Ullah Aman,
councilor of ward no-30 are accused in explosive substance act and
terrorist activities while Md Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, councilor of ward
no-18 are accused in 3 cases including interception on police duty and
vandalism charge.
Refuting the allegation Anis Biswas, Abul Kalam Azad and Hafiz told
BSS that they were victims by the police and ruling party Awami
League’s conspiracy.
The lone Jamaat backed councilor-elect of ward no-31 Sheikh Zahangir
Hossain Helal was accused in three cases including attempt to murder
and attacked on a government official.
The independent councilor-elect of ward no-26 Golam Mowla Shanu was
also accused in several cases including murder.  Earlier, he was
acquitted from several murder cases and eight arms and explosives act
cases.
Advocate Kudrot-e-Khuda, Khulna District unit general secretary of
SUJON told BSS that it is not good example for good governance. The
accused were acquitted due to weak and faulty police investigation.
Collecting the report from the councilor’s affidavit submitted to the
election commission before KCC election, Khuda pointed out that EC
should have under consideration the matter in next polls.
Assistant Police Commissioner Abul Kalam Azad of KMP refused to make
any comment about the cases against those councilors-elect in KCC.
