BGB members may fire shots to stop bombing: Gen Aziz

The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) carrying ‘lethal weapons’ during their patrols in a number of districts to tackle blockaders will fire shots in self-defence, said its director general Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed on Thursday.
“BGB carries lethal weapons, but they won’t fire shots on anyone. If someone launches any attack, BGB members can open fire in self-defence,” the BGB chief told a media briefing at Pilkhana. BGB has been deployed since the start of the blockade of the Bnp-led 20-Party Alliance on 05 January. If someone carries bombs or petrol bombs, it can lead to the death of people, and, if such a scene comes into the sight of any BGB member, it is his responsibility to counteract, he added
Maj Gen Aziz noted that about 80-85 platoons of BGB have been on a round-the-clock patrol to fend off troubles in 16-17 districts amid the blockade while 75-80 more platoons have been kept standby.
Noting that officials from 30-35 district administrations have requested the BGB deployment, he said, “We’ve already contacted the officials concerned and assured them that the forces will be deployed when needed.” – UNB
Another report adds: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed has warned trouble-makers that his troops will shoot bombers to protect citizens.
In a query about what kind of weapons the BGB had been using, he said, “All BGB weapons are lethal. But BGB personnel will not shoot anyone unless it is to protect lives.”
“… to wound a bomber is their (BGB) responsibility,” the BGB DG has been quoted to have said.
