Election Commission (EC) is closely monitoring different allegations against the candidates and ‘important’ persons who are campaigning on behalf of the contestants in the upcoming municipality polls by violating the election code of conduct.Meanwhile, the Commission has found several allegations in different municipalities for breaching the election code of conduct by the lawmakers and candidates.
Realising the matter, the commission issued letters to the returning officers of 17 municipalities, asking them to report what actions they have taken against 10 lawmakers and five candidates after investigation of the allegations.
EC deputy secretary Rakibuddin Mandol issued the letters on Tuesday in this regard.
He said that they are monitoring different allegations found in the media or allegations sent to the EC in writing by the aggrieved persons.
He said there is no scope to take action against the responsible persons for breaching election code of conduct without any investigation.
The returning officers will say what action can be taken after investigation, he added.
EC sources said that they have found allegation against 10 lawmakers for violating the election code of conduct. The lawmakers were, including, Nahim Razzak of Shariatpur-3, Advocate Md. Abu Zahir of Habiganj-3, Md. Abdul Quddus of Natore-4, Hashibur Rahman Swapon of Sirajganj-6, Md. Kabirul Haque of Narail-1, Md. Suhrab Uddin Kishoreganj-2 and Md. Afzal Hossain of Kishoreganj-5, Md. Abdur Rahman of Faridpur-1, and former home minister Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir.
Talking to some returning officers of the 17 municipalities, they said they have not yet received any such letter from Election Commission but they said they would respond the letter.
“I did not get any such letter. But I will follow the instruction of EC,” Habiganj district returning officer Mohammad Belayet Hossain Chowdhury told The Independent yesterday.
Faridul Islam, returning officer of Faridpur said that he also did not get any such letter.
“I did not get any such letter yet. If I get the instruction, I must follow the instruction,” he added.
