Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Jabed Ali on Sunday underscored the importance of preventing the use of religion in election campaign for holding fair polls apart from curbing cyber crimes. “There’s no alternative to preventing cyber crimes and abuse of religion for the sake of fair election,” he said while speaking at a views-exchange meeting organised by the Election Commission (EC) at Kishoreganj deputy commissioner’s office ahead of by-election to Kishoreganj-4.
Jabed Ali observed that there have been efforts to confuse the voters in recent polls through spreading baseless information about the candidates on internet. “Besides, a tendency of attracting voters through using the religious worship places was widely seen.”
About the June 3 by-election to Kishoreganj-4 parliamentary seat, the election commissioner said they have already taken an ‘all-out’ preparation to hold the by-polls in a free and fair manner.
He said the three-tier security measure will be adopted in the election to ensure security of the voters in all the polling centres.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) will discharge duties as striking force alongside the police and riot police during the by-polls, he said, adding that Coast Guard will also be deployed to ensure overall security.
Mymensingh regional election officer Syed M Khurshid Anwar, returning officer M Zahid Hossain, among others, spoke at the meeting presided over by Kishoreganj DC M Siddiqur Rahman.
Meanwhile, independent candidate in the by-election Syed Mihitul Islam Ashim demanded removal of officers-in-charge of three local police stations on charge allegations of misusing power in the polls. (Source: UNB)
