Two Chittagong BNP leaders held, Fakhrul wants them freed

Plainclothes police arrested BNP Chattogram divisional organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim and city BNP general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar from the city’s GEC intersection on Monday.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the duo in front of Hotel Meridian around 1:45 pm, said city BNP assistant officer secretary Idris Ali.

Mehedi Hasan, deputy commissioner (north) of DB police, Chattogram said the BNP leaders were arrested in a case filed on charge of attacking police on the court premises on Sunday.On Sunday, a group of BNP leaders and activists swooped on police on the court premises after a court cancelled the bail of party leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Later, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station against some 150 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies in this connection.Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly condemned and protested the arrest of the two leaders.

In a statement, he said the government is arresting BNP leaders and activists one after another to implement its ‘evil plans’ ahead of the next general election. Fakhrul said the government has continued arresting their party leaders and workers to eliminate the opposition parties for depoliticisation in the country.He demanded the government immediately release Shamim and Hashem.
