Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will visit India from Wednesday at the invitation of her counterpart Meira Kumar.
She will hold discussions with the Lok Sabha Speaker and meet other Indian dignitaries during the tour that will run through to Feb 15, said the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The visit, it said in a media release, was a part of “regular high level exchanges between India and Bangladesh, which aim to foster better understanding and friendship between the two countries”.
The visit comes a month after the Awami League formed government for the second successive term following Jan 5 elections that the Opposition led by the BNP boycotted.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, also a senior politician of the ruling party, was the first minister to visit India and meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, among others.
The High Commission said the Speaker’s visit followed the last visit of Indian Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to Bangladesh in Feb 2009.-bdnews24.com
